The
Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) recently issued a red alert that 11 states out of the 36 states in the country will be
flooded in the month of August.
The
11 states are Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Kaduna,
Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe and Zamfara.
The
agency urged relevant government agencies to initiate appropriate emergency
evacuation plans as soon as necessary, in order to reduce the devastating effects of flooding on the residents in the states.
NIMET
in its report on Rainfall Situation and Prospects of Flooding in August to
October 2016, signed by its head of Corporate Communication, Eva Azinge,
revealed that the saturation of soil moisture in the affected states was due to
cumulative high intensity rainfall in June and July.
The
report said: "Soil moisture has either reached saturation, or near
saturation levels, due to cumulative high intensity rainfall in some parts of
the country in June and July.
NIMET
in exercise of its mandate to monitor the weather and climate of the country at
all times, and working in collaboration with the Nigerian Hydrological Services
Agency has been monitoring rainfall events across Nigeria.
